Slum Girl Initiative

At Slum Girl Initiative we work to restore dignity and confidence to girls, young women including young mothers, living in Kenya’s informal settlement area (slum) in and beyond Korogocho

About us

SGI's

Mission is to improve the lives and protect the rights of slum girls, young mothers and women at large. We seek to understand their needs, identify solutions and implement programs and policies to enhance their resilience. This means we hope that the young females amongst us will have better health and social welfare through the provision of sanitary pads and menstrual education, via education, through sponsorship and by empowering young women through income generating activities all with the aim to have their human rights respected and protected.

JANNY ON A JOURNEY

Janny-A teacher, a mother to many, a mentor, a life coach, a friend and many more great compliments directed to this strong type of woman. Amid women, she stands out as a support system to a lot of families and individuals. With more than 8 years offering support to Korogocho slum residence and more people. She is still chasing her dreams and fulfilling her passion.
Working with Janny has been a great audition in my career. For the short time we worked together as social workers in Grapes-yard Organization, I was able to learn a lot and network with different Community Based Organizations(CBO) and Non-governmental Organizations(NGO) to help make Korogocho a better place and a safer residence for girls and the general public. Together we handled Gender based violence cases, sexual assault and disease awareness campaigns e.g. the sickle cell campaign in conjunction with Joanne Chazima foundation, and the pad-drive to support different school girls.
Janny lives a selfless lifestyle(because social work is a lifestyle). I understand at times it may seem exhausting but keep going on you are a star.
The slum girls initiative was a great idea brought up by Nanny and it is one of the biggest achievements she has made during her time in korogocho. Restoring dignity an confidence to young mothers, youths and children living in informal settlements of Kenya is SGIs main agenda.
Long live SGI and God bless you Janny

Who We Serve

Children 3 to 5 years

We all know that children are vulnerable to the effects of poor nutrition. Slum Girls Initiative seeks to improve the health and confidence of children through the provision of a balanced diet to children between 3 5o 5 years of age. Mostly we target the ECDE children in one of our partner schools. We have 130 children who benefit from lunch in school for 3 days a week. We are hopeful that in future we will be able to open up a school that will take care of children holistically.

Adolescent girls (and some boys)

The Slum Girls Initiative MHM and SRH programs are tailored for this vulnerable age group because decisions made and attitudes and behaviors acquired during this period affects the rest of their lives. During this period many girls drop out of school due to lack of essential materials and information to handle this critical stage or to abuse and exploitation. We therefore seek to mentor them and give them confidence to make positive decisions about boys and relationships in general and by providing enough sanitary pads and underwear to be able to sit comfortably in class and enjoy their lessons. We equip them with the right information to be able to take charge of their sexual and reproductive health. We also have a focus on girls in high schools 13 to 19 years of age. Here they are mentored with life skills to be able to face their adult life. These skills help them find new ways of thinking and problem solving. Bearing in mind the negative consequences of some of their actions and teaching them to take responsibility for their actions and to not blame others. This way Slum Girls Initiative helps them build confidence in both communication and collaborative skills. They also help them find new ways of socializing, making new friends without compromising who they are and their dignity. So far many children have benefited from this program.

Young mothers 14-25 Years

Slum Girls Initiative partners with other like-minded individuals to support young mothers with care kits that consist of baby clothes, pampers and other baby products. We hope one day to start up a rescue centre for teenage mothers where we can care for and equip the young mothers with life skills like dress making, tailoring and hair dressing

“We are currently undertaking the construction of a new community school. This exciting project aims to provide students with modern facilities and resources that will enhance their learning experience. The building process is progressing smoothly and we are confident that the school will be ready to welcome students in the second term. We believe that this new addition will have a positive impact on the education system and the community as a whole. We are eagerly looking forward to the opening of the school and we are confident that it will be a success.”

“Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) refers to the practices and measures taken to ensure good health and dignity for women and girls during their menstrual period. It involves having access to clean and hygienic menstrual products, adequate facilities for changing and disposing of used products, and proper education and knowledge about menstrual health. MHM is a crucial aspect of women’s and girls’ health and well-being, and it has a significant impact on their ability to participate in daily activities, including school and work. Ensuring that all women and girls have access to MHM resources and education is a key aspect of promoting gender equality and improving health outcomes for all individuals.”

PADNT comes from pants & pads. As part of our commitment to improving the lives of girls and women, we run a fundraising campaign for panties and pads. The collected funds are used to purchase these essentials, which are often unaffordable for many. On distribution day, we gather all the girls from our partner schools and provide them with the items they need. This day is also an opportunity to educate and raise awareness on menstrual health and hygiene. We invite various speakers to share their experiences and insights, creating a supportive and empowering environment for the girls. Our goal is to not only address the practical needs of these girls but also to promote self-confidence, dignity and equality.
